Using Weights in the Analysis of Survey Data

The variable suly_uj in the downloadable databases allows weighting by the number of persons employed in each wave of the data collection, by region, by size class, and by sector of full-time employees. (This function is not available in the 'Analysis' menu, where the unweighted database can be examined. To use the weighting, the database must be downloaded.)

The results weighted using the variable suly_uj are considered to be representative of the combined distribution of full-time employees in the competitive sector by geographical location, economic branch, and enterprise size class.

The use of weighting is justified in terms of content if the research question directly relates to the number or proportion of employees, or if we want to interpret the answers (opinions and attitudes) of the responding managers and HR staff in such a way that it is important to distinguish between their companies in terms of their importance for the national economy as a whole, based on the number of employees. By using weighting, the responses of firms with larger employment in the central region are given a significantly higher weight compared to other firms, as these firms employ a significant share of the domestic competitive workforce (firms with more than 250 employees account for over 40 percent of total employment in most years, while firms in the central region employ nearly half of the full-time employees in the competitive sector).

In cases where the research question specifically asks about the share of firms about a particular measure or characteristic (e.g. share of firms employing young people), the use of a weighting based on the suly_uj variable is not justified. This is because in this case, firms are the unit of analysis, regardless of their size.
